Hello everyone I'm Rasmus a MALE Au Pair and btw I'm straight ;-)
This is the story of my life overseas in the U.S. and the people who have and will have had such a huge impact on my life. As mentioned I'm a male a Au Pair who was with a host family, that happens to be gay, who specifically wanted a straight male Au Pair. The adventure begins. :)
The 24th of February 2014 an early cold Monday morning, the sun sets in the east. Here we are at my former address getting ready to go to the Copenhagen airport, destination = The United States Of America. By now I've been interviewed and matched and received the opportunity of my life, and finally the day arrived for me to head of to my host family, after a short stay at the Cultural Care au pair training school in Oakdale, New York (I haven't slept for the last 2 months since I got the job because of excitement).
After a long and sleepless flight the group of au pairs including me arrives to the training school in Oakdale around 1AM. Full of excitement, hopes, expectations and neverousness concerning the families and their ways of welcoming a new person into their lives.
The Cultural Care Au Pair training school in Oakdale gave me a mixed impression of the agency. On the plus side I definetly think that the classes were useful, the teacher's were very helpful, open minded, funny, educated and motivative. I definetly had fun during those days with great company from all the other Au Pairs since we're in the exact same situation. On the downside the rooms were pretty cold, and the food counter... lets just say, "creative".
Thursday afternoon a New York City tour was planned for all the Au Pairs. My host dad Chris picked me up that night cause they were unable to pick me up Friday morning. Therefore after the end of the tour just outside "Top Of The Rock" at Rockafeller Center, we had agreed to meet. During the tour I was unable to lay back and enjoy it cause of my excitement of meeting my host family for the very first time!!! I was counting each second of the tour, it was like a count down of a ticking bomb slow and painful. But finally came my experience at Top Of The Rock. I stepped out of the bus and greeted all the other Au Pairs a lovely stay here in the US, afterwards I was just about to make a 360 degrees turn to look for Chris, when I suddenly heard a voice that I could recognize saying: "good evening sir, how are you tonight?" I turned and screamed like hell: "hiiiiiiiiiiii Chris, omg so nice to meet you in real life, you can't believe how excited I am!!!, wow this is unbelievable!!!". After greeting each other we got on a train towards my new home...
As we stepped into the apartment building Chris showed me the doorstep to the exact apartment where my host child Kensi was at during that moment, but told me that we had to go upstairs to set off my luggage in our flat. I thought to myself and told him: that's just rude.... ;-) cause all I wanted was to get in there and meet Kensi and give her a big old hug. When we arrived to my new home, Chris showed me around the apartment and all I could think of was to get downstairs and meet Kensi, the seconds felt like years. The moment finally arrived so I rushed downstairs to the apartment where
Kensi were at. I knocked on the door and by the doorstep a man and a woman appeared, Dan and Deb, some very friendly and welcoming people, who now I'm sure will have an impact on my stay here in the US. I couldn't wait to meet Kensi for the first time in real life, I walked through the hallway and heard some kids fooling around. I was sure that one of me was Kensi.... As I stepped in the living room I saw Kensi and her playmate Daniel (Dan and Deb's kid) jumping up and down in the sofa. A HUGE smile appeared on my face when I saw Kensi, this cute silly little princess full of joy and a radiation of happiness, hope and comfort at the same time.I walked slow and steady with a feeling of excitement and nervousness of her reaction towards my presents. I got on my knees and introduced myself, as she replied: Hi Rasmus. I told and asked her: Wauw, you're definitely good at that, can I see how far you can jump? She then showed me, and further on I was playing with both Kensi and Daniel.
When we came back to our apartment Kensi told me she had a surprise for me, so she told me to close my eyes, when I got the permission to open them again, she showed me these cookies she made for me. I blushed and told her: Wauw, they're are beautiful and looks delicious, I can't wait to
taste them! As we ate a cookie, I told her I also had some surprises for her. I gave her a Lego set and a box of hair bands. After unwrapping up the presents, we played for a little while before it was bedtime for Kensi, she asked me if I wanted to read her the bedtime story, which I found to be a fantastic start of mine and that pretty little princess' relationship. Before my bedtime Chris showed me around in my room, with all the new stuff he and Paul gave me, especially a special soap they gave me (inside joke) :)
As I lay in my bed, my head was still full of excitement, hopes and dreams for this new chapter in my life. The nervousness had shaken off since the family had welcomed me with open arms.
